Roger Dingledine and Jacob Appelbaum held a very interesting talk about how governments around the world are blocking the Tor Onion Router privacy tool at this years Chaos Communication Congress. The video is very interesting and worth viewing.

Mr. Dingledine and Mr. Appelbaum lay out the technical details on how tyrannical regimes are blocking Tor. They also make the point that surveillance is a much bigger and more serious problem than web censorship. You do not see surveillance, but you do notice when web sites are blocked. Tyrannically controlled countries like Norway do not block websites, they just covertly torture those who write something “bad” on the Internet. They also point out that the worlds most tyrannical countries surveillance systems are dependent on cooperation with known western terrorist organizations like Intel, Nokia and Cisco, and their surveillance equipment is in some cases completely controlled by these western terrorist groups.

The video is 1 hour and 26 minutes long and it is worth viewing. Video playback requires a HTML5 compatible web browser. You can download the video and view it using standard player software such as VLC if you web browser lacks HTML5 support.
