"The average CP-browsing pedophile isn’t the most technically adept individual."

Bigotry runs in your family does it? I can understand your phobia with the media sensationalizing pedophilia. We all know that pedophiles are all child molesters after all and want to get into our kids pants. The hysteria is ridicules. This is a horrible American propagated image. All the worse child abuse is still common. More than 90% of parents hit their kids. So do southern US schools. Pedophiles are god's priests. Every catholic boy is told they will know if they were chosen. I wonder why so many catholic priests are child molesters or pedophiles? Any person who spends the time to do the research (no one does and not much unbiased scientific research exists) would see child molesters molest out of convenience and not sexual desire.

"My point is that tracking pedophiles is possible, not that there aren’t ways around it"

Of course it is possible to track people who don't understand the technology. It doesn't mean we should do it even if they are the scum of the universe. If you have read the police crack downs they basically read like this: “6,000 pedophiles arrested”, followed a week later by “5,989 child pornography charges dropped”. Society and the police don't have the intelligence to pick out the child molesters from the tracked individuals and in the mean time thousands upon thousands of innocent lives are destroyed. People are murdered or commit suicide. Some are lucky enough to get away with just being fired and broken marriages. We have overreacted when it comes to child pornography. Even if 100% of pedophiles and child molesters posses hard core cp 98% of it is soft core where no child was victimized. Other studies show that legalizing adult pornography reduces rapes. Why is it every child advocate claims child molestations are caused or will rise with the proliferation of cp? Every pedophile already knows it is illegal. The answer is that irrational right-wing religious fanatics are the child advocates and they are all against any pornography and this is just another avenue to destroy some of it.

franken is right. i can confirm that CP-browsing tor users are much more adapt at technology than you give them credit for. you realize this didn't work before on those users and it certainly doesn't work now. i have some ideas i'll keep to myself on how it may be possible to decloak a user regardless. even the idea to set the users home page to a unique address would have failed.

I actually think it's quite safe to assume that the perhaps 1% of Tor-users who are actually doing CP-browsing are much more aware of the technical details than the 99% of the users who just want to avoid websites giving them advertisements based on their interest.

If your adversary is law enforcement then you're going to pay more attention to technical detalis than if your adversary is nothing more than corporations who want to serve you targeted ads? So the tracking-code will perhaps help China track Tor-users who have java enabled who are using Tor just because they can't get to e-bay without using it, but I'm fairly sure that it'll get close to zero of those "cp browsing" targets.

A demo of the decloak code is <a href="http://metasploit.com/research/misc/decloak/" rel="nofollow">online</a>. Not every TOR user masks their DNS (anyone using plain socks4 mode is caught this way). Many popular sites *require* Java to function (hushmail for instance). The average CP-browsing pedophile isn't the most technically adept individual. My point is that tracking pedophiles is possible, not that there aren't ways around it =P An older copy of the patched TOR code can be found at http://metasploit.com/svn/torment/
